I think one of the double-edged swords of being a teacher is that of having the same schedule as the students so while you can treat yourself to a long break during August it also means you aren’t being paid. As a kid it isn’t really the sort of thing that bothers you all that much in between school terms, a small summer job is enough to see you through beach trips and parties. Teachers need money too though, and the savvy among them realise that there is a whole month with unexploited possibilities and opportunities for professionals like them.
Sell Lesson Plans
Did I say teachers have the same schedules as students? Scratch that. There are mountains of homework that must be done to make sure the kids actually have things to do every day. This, in itself can become a lucrative business opportunity if you have particularly good ideas or if you can see other teachers need your help. Teaching communities need collaboration and if people are willing to pay for your efforts, who are you to say no?
Tutor
Private tuition is becoming the norm among families who have the money; however, tutoring is such a rich area there are hundreds of different avenues you could choose to pursue. Spend a month teaching English abroad would work as qualified teachers are hot property in certain countries or even doing online courses remotely with a qualification and a laptop your only essentials. Or those willing to tutor adults are always needed and welcome at adult training centres. With the skills and the time, teaching can be applied anywhere as there are always people willing to pay for it.
Professional Blogging
Writing about what you know is what most writers advise you to do and so a teaching blog might be an interesting way to boost your profile in the education community and any traction you get would probably further your career. Also no one is saying you can’t personalise it if you’d rather spend a month talking about anything but work! Blogging is a great pastime that can be turned into a cash cow with the right know-how.
Write For Other Blogs
Honestly, with a wealth of experience, there are already blogs out there dedicated to the art of teaching and your experiences, stories or advice could be commissioned and you could be able to monetise all of that. BoredTeachers is a good option as they strongly encourage fellow teachers to contribute.
Babysit
You know all those kids that are currently not in school; wouldn’t it be great to hang out with them again? No? Well, what if I said someone would pay you for it. The truth is a lot of parents work through the summer months and so with their kids on holiday they are somewhat unaccompanied a lot the time. Clearly, this is aimed specifically at primary school kids and toddlers but you have the experience so throw your hat into the ring and see what happens.
