The busy mind is a curse that seems to haunt a great number of people. Science says you need at least 6-8 hours’ sleep to be firing on all cylinders the next morning and yet so many of don’t achieve it. It’s one of those things where the more you think about it, the more difficult it seems to be to achieve. A military grade method hit the internet recently and has a 96% success rate after six weeks, so why not give it a go.
Relax your Face
People carry tension in their faces without even realising it. Take right now for example, you’re likely clenching your jaw and craning your neck forward. The most interesting of these is the way we pin our tongues to the roofs of our mouths, it’s a sign of tension that many of don’t even know we are exhibiting. So the first step is to relax all of your facial muscles so your face droops and hangs and so no unnecessary energy is going into your keeping your face presentable.
Relax Your Body
There is a technique that seems to start with the upper body and in the end the whole body is relaxed. Start with the shoulders and take each one at a time. If you take each body part separately then there will be a sense of progress to your relaxation technique. So, it goes shoulders, then arms and then legs. As long as all your limbs are relaxed you can then commit to the next two stages.
Breathe
There is a misconception that focusing on breathing makes you anxious. Breathing is something that happens naturally and therefore the minute you notice you’re doing it you start to think about a process that should happens organically. However, if you focus you can get into a steady rhythm and make sure your breathing hits the same notes over and over. Its systemic and once you’ve been breathing in the same pattern for 10 seconds move onto to the last step.
Visualisation
The recommended scenarios for visualisation are:
a.) Lying in a canoe on a calm lake with nothing but the blue or night sky above you. Perfectly still
b.) Laying in a black velvet hammock in a pitch black room. Letting the hammock completely envelope your body
These visuals should be accompanied by the some words from you. The recommended words stay with the theme of repetitiveness and you should apparently say ‘don’t think, don’t think, and don’t think’ over and over again for ten seconds. Should that not work, yoga techniques of ‘letting the mind wander to observe thoughts without focusing on them’ -usually helps.
